| Three different impressions of Ovid in the town of Sulmona, his birthplace. |

| ABOUT US: We are in an agricultural part of Sulmona in Abruzzo (see map below), close to Badia and the romantically named Fonte d'Amore. The former watermeadows that surround the properties correspond closely with those described by Ovid in his letters from exile. The accommodation and four day courses (arrive Saturday pm depart Thursday am), which are intended for a maximum of twelve people, are in a pair of adjacent rural villas set in their own grounds. The cost, inclusive of five nights' B&B and the course, is just 200 Euros per person. The emphasis is on assisted self-tuition, singly and in groups, using source materials originating mainly from the 18th century, augmented by modern commentaries and technologies. Mornings will usually be spent studying and preparing, followed by afternoon topic presentations to the other course members. Whenever possible we will work out of doors, usually in the shade of the avenue of pines in the second garden. The local environment provides the ideal setting for this, with its Ovidian associations; Roman, earlier and later history; wide variety of plant life; operatic traditions; and local attractions - not forgetting the spectacular Morrone and Maijella mountains close by. Our days begin at 09:00 and run through to 13:00 with a leisurely mid-morning break. There is then, in keeping with local custom, an extended lunch period, when guests can enjoy a snack, take time to read, relax or explore the local area. The afternoon session then continues from 16:00 to 19:00, after which the local ristorantes and pizzerias are open to be investigated. Evening cultural entertainments at the Teatro Comunale don't usually start until 21:00 so there will no need for any undue haste. Wednesday mornings are kept free to allow guests to visit the open-air market in Sulmona and to explore the town. Transport will be available for those without cars. Courses then resume at 14:00 and run through to 19:00 as usual. Kitchen facilities for refreshments or simple meal preparations are available for use in both properties. An appropriate supply of the local Dragani wines - red montepulciano d'abruzzo, cerasuolo rose and trebbiano white, will be freely available from lunchtime. We think these courses are an interesting alternative to conventional holidays, for individuals, for couples and for small groups. All will be made very welcome. Why not give us a try? |
